Haiku by Matsuo Basho. Artwork myself.
The 10th haiku from "Nozarashi Kiko".
In his journal, Basho wrote: "There’s a stream in the lower end of Saigyo ̄ Valley. As I gazed at women washing potatoes..."
In the haiga, I tried to enhance the feminine quality, first by depicting the fingers with smooth curves, second by placing them next to a sweet potato with rugged lines and texture. I am sure Saigyo would have liked the graceful hands of the women washing potatoes.
