Tondo

The shimenawa is traditionally used to separate the sacred area from the secular one. It is usually used at Shinto shrines, and on the new year it decorates the entrance of ordinary people's houses. It is a decoration like the wreath in the west, but meant to keep the evil spirits away from home.
