Haiku is so short a poem. So, alluding and referencing are employed to enrich its content. Basho's haiku have a lot of those, especially to Classic Chinese poetry, and waka poems written by poets in olden time, like Saigyo. Now, when haiku is written internationally, knowledge of world literature and history can be used for that purpose.
I am only a student, who is struggling to devote time for my interests -- except reading notes and references that some sites provide -- still i'm no where, when it comes to reading and understanding short forms... may be in due course of time i will learn to make the association -

Sad situation. The ashes interrupt life. Like in Pompeji. Ashes to ashes ... somehow. You got this atmosphere perfectly.

Yes, Pompei was on my mind when I wrote this haiku. In Pompei's case, it was pyroclastic flow that almost instantly buried all forms of life there.
